5 Ways to Become Dentally Zen
Have you ever wanted to reach that dental state of enwhitenment? Here are 5 ways to achieve your dental Zen goals:
1. Watch What You Eat and Drink
The mouth is the gateway to the digestive system, and what you consume can impact both your teeth and gut health. Pay attention to sugar and additives in your foods and drinks—read ingredient labels and try to avoid the tempting lolly aisle. Instead, increase fermented foods (like kimchi, kombucha, or even natto if you’re brave), fill your plate with fresh leafy greens, reduce red meat intake by trying No Meat Monday, and remember to drink plenty of water.
2. Mindful Brushing and Flossing
Many patients find their oral health routine boring or feel they don't have the time. Why not use those minutes to be present and meditate while you brush? Meditation has proven benefits for mental and overall well-being. So, when you brush twice a day, take deep breaths, focus on the action, and stay in the moment. Feel the bristles over your teeth and gums, taste the toothpaste, and bring your attention back if your mind wanders. You may soon find mindful brushing to be your favourite part of the day.
3. Breathing Exercises
What does breathing have to do with dental health? Nasal breathing, tongue positioning, and lip posture affect jaw development in children and may help reduce allergies. The Buteyko Breathing Method encourages breathing through the nose, with the tongue resting on the roof of the mouth and lips sealed. Practising this, especially from a young age, promotes proper jaw growth and can help teeth align correctly.
4. Drink Water
You’ve heard it before—drink at least two litres of water per day. Not only does this keep you hydrated, but it also helps your teeth. Water buffers acids from food and drink, protecting your teeth from decay. After consuming sugary or acidic foods, your teeth are more susceptible to damage. By drinking water, you can reduce these acid attacks and protect your teeth.
5. Develop Positive Habits
How often have you been told to floss more? And how often do you forget? Developing a positive habit is key to good oral hygiene. Try keeping your floss or Piksters in the shower to remind you to floss daily. If you're new to flossing, start by doing it three times a week and gradually increase until it becomes a routine. Brush your teeth twice a day—once when you wake up and once before bed. Carry a water bottle to remind yourself to stay hydrated throughout the day. These small reminders will help you develop lasting positive dental habits.
Now that you know the secrets to becoming dentally zen, you'll soon be levitating in a state of enwhitenment!
